⭐Step-By-Step Process of Hand-Tufted Rug Finishing

If you’re a fan of handmade carpets, especially hand-tufted rugs… then this guide is just for you. Today, we’ll show you, from the ground level, how the finishing process of a hand-tufted rug takes place in Bhadohi workshops—step by step, in simple language, as if you were standing inside the workshop itself.

And yes, we’ve also added a video of the actual Bhadohi workshop below, which will give you complete clarity on how the actual work is done.
Let’s go!

⭐What are hand-tufted rugs?

A hand-tufted rug is a carpet made with a tufting gun. This means the artisan punches wool or yarn through the canvas with a gun.
The entire process is fast and the output is a fluffy, soft, and premium quality rug – perfect for modern homes.
But the real magic is in the finishing. Beautiful finishing is what transforms a raw tufted panel into a perfectly shaped carpet.

🧵Step-by-Step: How hand-tufted are finished in Bhadohi

The steps below are the actual process followed in the Bhadohi workshop. Each step exemplifies the artisans’ generations-old skills.

STEP 1:Inspection after tufting is complete:

The first step after the design is punched with the tufting gun is:

  • Removing the panel from the frame.
  • Detailed inspection of the back and front sides.
  • Checking for loose yarns, uneven surfaces, or any missing details. In this stage master artisans match the design with the reference chart.

STEP 2: Latex Coating(The Backbone Layer):

The most important step in tufted rugs is applying latex.
Latex is basically an adhesive that holds the yarn firmly in place.

Process:

  • The rug is turned inside out.
  • A thick layer of latex is applied topically.
  • This layer permanently locks the rug’s yarns. In bhadohi this is done by high skilled workers so that the surface is smooth and the is long-lasting made.

STEP 3: Primary Backing Dry Hone Dena:

After latex, the rug is kept in the drying room or sunlight for 6-8 hours (depending on the weather).

Drying Ensures:

  • Yarn Firmly locked hota hai.
  • Rug shrink ya bubble nahi hota.
  • Finishing Achi hoti hai.

The dying in Bhadohi workshops has a unique charm – the rugs in clear lines shine in the sun.

STEP 4: Applying a secondary backing

Now the rug is given a secondary backing from Backside.

It can be possible:

  • Cotton cloth
  • Canvas backing
  • Latex glue with mesh

Its function is to give a strong structure to the rug and to make the backside clean and smooth. After applying secondary backing, both the weight and durability of the rug increase.

STEP 5: Edging, Binding, and Overlocking

Now comes the most artistic part of finishing:

  • The edges are cut to size.
  • The sides are stitched using an overlock machine.
  • If a customer is ordering binding finish carpet-After that seller will do cloth binding.

The artisans of Bhadohi call this stage the “life-giving step”.

STEP 6: Carving and Detailing (Hand Touch-Up Work)

Hand-tufted rugs have a signature feature called carving.

Carving se:

  • The design clarity is sharp.
  • 3D effect is created.

The depth and clarity of the design improves.
Artisans use a special carving machine to perfectly shape curves, flowers, mandala patterns, and motifs. It’s a truly unique experience to watch – so we’ve included a video of the actual workshop.

STEP 7: Surface Washing and Cleaning

After carving, the rug is given a deep wash:

  • Brushing the surface.
  • Cleaning the wool fibers.
  • Removing excess yarn.
  • Leveling the pile.

    This step ensures:

  • The rug looks fresh.

  • The fibers become soft.

  • Colors look bright and clean.

This work is done very professionally in Bhadohi wash units.

STEP 8: Final Shearing(Pile Height Equalization)

The final cutting of the rug is done using a shearing machine.
In this step, the artisan:

  • Yellow equalizes height.
  • Smooths the surface.
  • Gives the design a final polished look.
After sharing, the room gives a feel of hotel luxury.

Step 9: Quality Check (QC)-The Final Judgement

Every item is checked by the quality check team:

  • Is the size matching or not?
  • Are the colors uniform or not?
  • whether the edges are clean or not
  • Whether the surface is smooth and the curved design is perfect.

If there is any minor problem, the artisans immediately rectify it with hand work.

Step 10: Packing and Dispatch

Rugs in the last stage:

👉Properly folded.

👉Moisture-proof packing.

👉Prepared for export or domestic shipment.
